Be Your Guest
In our fast-paced busy lives, just sitting down to eat a meal can feel like a luxury. But go one step further and take time to enjoy the process of savouring a dish.
Think about when you go out to eat for a special occasion; the table is thoughtfully set with pressed linens, clinking glassware, heavy cutlery and curated crockery. A little bit of ceremony goes a long way to enjoying your meal from beginning to end.
If you have a little time up your sleeve, go out of your way to make your meal special. Use a piping bag to create mascarpone pillows on baked apricot halves, cut raw veggies on the bias and dip them into dishes of guacamole and pico de gallo, layer colourful fruits and berries with yogurt to create a kaleidoscopic parfait or even just sit and pause before you dine using both a fork and knife!
Bigger is Better!
SFD is all about getting the most out of your food, whether that’s nourishing our bodies on super foods or filling up on overflowing low-calorie dishes.
Compile a recipe collection of super low calorie meals that you can devour when you’ve got a hankering for a big bowl of something filling. Think: spaghetti squash with a veggie-chocked sauce or a hearty minestrone soup! The quantity of food will satisfy those eyes that are bigger than your stomach, but the miniscule calorie count won’t throw off your balance.
The darker the chocolate, the richer the taste!
Cocoa is one of the most jam-packed superfoods, and dark chocolate (the good quality stuff), boasts many of the super powers of its main ingredient. Cocoa’s uplifting effects on health include its ability to help lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, improve circulation, lower blood pressure, reduce cholesterol and protect skin from sun damage.
Cocoa is also brimming with antioxidants and minerals including potassium, zinc, iron and selenium. Just make sure you’re not loading up on Snickers bars and leftover Easter eggs; stick to the good quality semisweet or bittersweet chocolate with a high percentage of cocoa.
Super Fruits
Stave off the nagging of the sugar monster by filling up on natural sugars rather than processed ones. Luxe desserts such as frozen banana-based smoothies, baked stone fruits and frozen sweet grapes are indulgent alternatives to traditional sweets. Fruits, especially berries and melons, even have additional health benefits to boot!
Blueberries, for example, are high in Vitamins K and C as well as containing fibre, manganese and antioxidants. Their ability to lower the risk of heart attack, stroke and high blood pressure have also been studied extensively. So, you can feel pretty chuffed with yourself for noshing on pretty little rainbow fruit kebobs!
