Be inspired to hit the turbo button and super charge your weight loss results. We did!
When you’ve spent a lifetime trialling diets and weight loss methods that don’t work, finding intermittent fasting is a little like discovering the holy grail. It certainly felt like that for us! And when we realised it was possible to kick our weight loss into high gear every now and then by combining intermittent fasting methods – or as we like to call it turbo charging – it was like discovering a giant pot of gold, two unicorns and the perfect man inside the holy grail.

Super Sonic Slimdown

Fast track your weight loss results by briefly introducing a secondary intermittent fasting method, combining different techniques, adding an additional fast day or by dropping fast day calories. Sometimes a quick win on the scales can be incredibly motivating – especially if your results have started to slow down or you’ve hit a plateau.

It is an unfortunate fact of weight loss that you will plateau. “In general, people may plateau if they’re getting in the range of their normal weight,” suggests Associate Professor of Nutrition and intermittent fasting authority Dr. Krista Varady. “Other reasons for plateauing could be simply that you’re not counting calories as carefully as you may have been in the beginning.”

Overcoming Obstacles

Getting back to basics can boost you over a bump in the road. Adding an extra fast day, giving yourself a lower calorie lift or narrowing your eating window to help maximise fat-burning may also give you the shot in the arm that you need to power you through that plateau. It’s also very normal to hit more than one plateau, Dr. Varady explains. So, it’s important not to get down on yourself if you find your wins waning. “People may find that they hit multiple plateaus – for example one at six weeks, and another at fifteen or twenty weeks. This is not unusual.” If you feel like you’ve hit a wall, don’t yell at it – instead leap over it in a single bound by turbo charging for a week, getting back to calorie-counting basics or adding some exercise.

Killer Combo: “For me, combining the 2-day method (500 calories) with part-day works brilliantly to lose weight. I simply skip breakfast and have lunch around 1.00pm, then stop eating at 9.00pm. The discipline of the eight-hour window works well for me on non-fast days too, as after-dinner snacking is my greatest challenge. Upping my exercise also works well to turbo charge my results, because I find this makes me more likely to eat healthily.”  – Victoria Black

Turbo Tri Mix: “When I turbo charge, I try to fit every day into a part-day window: fast for 16 hours and eat within eight… no matter what the calorie allocation for that day is – and I also drop two of my days down to 1000 calories and one down to 500 calories. It’s been working really well for me, I’ve used this method to drop kilos post-holiday, for photo shoots and book launches. I call it a turbo tri mix! ” – Mary-Anne O’Connor

The Old Switcheroo: “For me, the best turbo charge was changing methods. I lost half my weight (15 kilos) on the 2-day method, and it works a treat, but then I experimented with part-day and combined them and it definitely turbo charged my results. I also combined 3-day and part-day for excellent results. I would not recommend this for newbies, but when you get used to it, it is easy. Another turbo is the mindset. Feeding my mind with positive information (such as our videos and our blogs!) is definitely a winner and will keep you motivated!” – Gen Davidson
