There’s nothing quite like music to motivate you to move a little more. And as MasterFasters, we need to discover exercise now, more than ever. Exercise and movement are critical to successful weight maintenance, according to one of Dr Krista Varady’s most recent studies. And not only that, but there’s a plethora of research which suggests that music not only helps you to perform better during exercise, but that it also helps you to enjoy movement more too. Cool, huh?

Why exercise?

We’re glad you asked! Exercise is pretty much a miracle tonic. And although it’s not that great a tool for weight loss, it is incredibly powerful. It has beneficial effects on a whole range of things like your bone health, mental health, cardiovascular fitness, mood, digestion, happiness and loads more. Here are nine scientifically backed facts on how awesome exercise is…

  1. Exercise makes you smarter [1]
  2. Exercise improves your memory [2]
  3. Exercise improves your mood and reduces stress [3]
  4. Exercise increases your lifespan [4]
  5. Exercise reduces your risk of cardiovascular disease [5]
  6. Exercise strengthens your heart and reduces blood pressure [6, 7]
  7. Exercise strengthens your bones and improves bone density [8]
  8. Exercise can reduce your risk of other diseases like diabetes [9]
  9. Exercise can improve the symptoms of depression and anxiety [10, 11]
  10. Exercise helps you chill out by quieting unnecessary brain activity [12]

How music helps you move

Basically, music helps to distract you, motivate you and keep you focused on the task at hand. Research has found that the right kind of music played during an exercise session will improve your physical performance, help encourage you to push a little harder for a little longer and make your workout fly by.

But don’t you hate it when you’re trying to walk at a particular speed and the music just. doesn’t. match? It’s like trying to dance without knowing the steps. You tend to trip over yourself. So, we’ve designed a perfect playlist specifically for walking. It starts with a warm up at 4.8km per hour and gradually builds to a solid 5.5km per hour, with a good four to five songs in between at each pace, so you can find your perfect walking speed and stick with it all spring.
