This week we’re focusing on recognising that, just like we aren’t perfect, we aren’t all-powerful either. And the good news is that we don’t need to be! One of the biggest mistakes people make is to believe that they have to do everything on their own: create their best life, get through difficulties, be strong, achieve their goals. We’ve certainly all been there and felt that, and one of the biggest lessons I’ve learned from the research and from all my experience is that the happiest and most successful people DON’T believe they have to do it all on their own. They realise and they understand the power in enlisting the support of others.
Happy people spend more time fostering, building and maintaining good quality relationships; at least in part because they know how important and how beneficial other people can be.
And successful people tend to know the same thing; that success and achievement, more often, comes to those who work well and collaborate effectively with others.
Connection and support are crucial contributors to your ability to live the SuperLife – the life you dream of.
So, what does this mean in the context of the program?
What it means is this: you’ll be far more likely to achieve your goals if you include others in your plans. You’ll be far more likely to lose weight, enjoy happiness and be successful, if you use those around you (and I don’t mean in a manipulative way, but rather, in a helpful, supportive way).
Numerous studies have shown that having a “buddy” increases the likelihood that people will stick to weight management programs, attend exercise classes or go to the gym, and keep up with pretty much any behaviour change program you can think of (including smoking cessation and mood improvement).
As such, in this lesson, your task is to build your own support team; and here’s how…
- Do you know someone who’d benefit from taking part in the SuperFastDiet program with you? If so, invite them to join in the fun!
- Who would be your best supporter (your partner, a family member, friend or even work colleague)? That is, who’d be most likely to cheer you on and reward you as you make progress? Talk to this person, explain what you’re doing, and trying to do and, notably, ask if they’d be willing to check-in with you at regular intervals and provide you with positive reinforcement
- Finally, what (if any) professional supports do you need? Which experts might increase your chances of succeeding and achieving your goals? How can you make the best use of the SuperFastDiet team? And/or other health and wellbeing specialists?
Don’t be shy! If you need help, ask for it. That’s what friends, the SFD team, and our experts are here for. Who knows, you might even end up with a fast friend.
